Mitti in the Indian language means soil. The Mitti Attar is the oil of the earth. It is derived from the mud cakes and possesses the essence of the first monsoon rain. The attar was made in order to capture the sweet smell of the rain falling down on wet soil of the earth that is also known as petrichor. The oil is extracted through the process of steam distillation and also blended with sandalwood and sometimes calendula oil, enhancing its earthen fragrance. Apart from the fragrance, it is also blessed with many skin and health related properties.
Mitti Attar is made in the traditional way by using Deg &Bhapka method even today. A special type of soil that is only found in a particular area of kannauj, and is sourced from the soil of wild harvested mud, is used to prepare Mitti Attar. It is called as GeeliMitti, Matiyaar, or Maati, Barsati Mitti in the native language.
